Renting speakers for a party: what size, how many, and what else you need

Renting a speaker is easy. Renting the right speaker, with the right cable, for a room you have not thought about is where it goes wrong. Here is the short guide we give everyone who calls the shop.

By headcount

• Up to 50 people, one room or a backyard: one powered column speaker like the JBL EON ONE or the Electro-Voice Evolve 50. It runs off a phone over Bluetooth, has a mic input, and one person can carry it.
• 50 to 150 people: two powered speakers on stands, one each side of the dance floor or the stage. The JBL PRX512M or a pair of columns both work; two sources spread the sound so nobody is standing in front of the loud one.
• 150 and up, or outdoors: call us. At that size it is a system with a subwoofer and a mixer, and usually a person to run it.

What people forget

• Stands. A speaker on the floor sends sound into shins. Rent the stands.
• A microphone. Toasts, announcements, the game at the office party. A wireless handheld plugs straight into any of our speakers.
• The cable from your laptop. Bring the adapter for your phone or laptop, or ask us; we have them.
• Power. Powered speakers need an outlet each. A backyard with one extension cord across the lawn is a tripping hazard and a dead speaker when someone kicks it. Our battery-powered options solve that for a few hours.
• The room. A gym or a tent on a slab echoes; a carpeted hotel room does not. Tell us the room and we will tell you where to point the speakers.

How renting from us works

Everything on the rentals page is priced per day, with online checkout. Pick up in Murrells Inlet the morning of, bring it back the next day, or ask about delivery and setup when you check out. For a multi-day event, add the days to the quantity or tell us in the order notes. We show you how everything connects when you pick it up, and we answer the phone when you are standing in the venue.
